Celebrations of St James Day in London The Feast of St James on 25th July (or a weekend nearby) will be celebrated in churches of St James all over the country and all over London, but there are two churches in London which are pre- eminent, and with which the CSJ has celebrated for many years. They are: St James Garlickhythe (Church of England) and St James’s, Spanish Place (Catholic). Garlickhythe was the wharf in the City of London where garlic and wine from Spain were unloaded, and the church continues its link with the Vintners’ Company. It is no longer on the riverside but slightly inshore at Garlick Hill, EC4V 2AF. Its most striking feature is the external clock with Santiago Peregrino crowning it. TheRector, Canon Anthony Howe, will celebrate the Eucharist for the Feast on Sunday, 21st July at 10.30, followed by lunch (£20) at 12.30. Their website has a link to the CSJ website in its “Pilgrimage” section. St James’s, Spanish Place has its origins in the chapel of the Spanish Embassy, and is now situated at 22 George Street, W1U 3QY; Tel. 020-7935 0943, SJRCC website The links with the Spanish Embassy are maintained, and the Ambassador or his delegates will be present for the feast, on Thursday 25 th at 7pm. The Mass will be celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio (the Pope’s Ambassador to Britain) at the invitation of the Rector, Mgr Philip Whitmore. There will be a reception afterwards. The neo-Gothic church has many representations of St James: an altar frontal, a statue and stained glass of the life of St James. There is an excellent choir.
