The pleasure of these 'maps' editions of the John Brierley guidebook (2023/4) is that they have been so thoroughly road tested by countless pilgrims for route guidance and accommodation. The maps editions have less background history and cultural information than found in his more comprehensive 'Pilgrims Guide to the Camino Portugues' but it does weigh so much less which is an important consideration for many camino walkers.
The guide covers the central route 'Camino Central' from Lisbon to Santiago, the coastal routes from Porto called the 'Camino da Costa, plus the seashore 'Senda Litoral'. This latter route is exposed to windblown sand from Atlantic winds but recent and ongoing improvements has widened its appeal. The 'Variante Espiritual' via Ria Arousa is also included.
This route, incredibly popular in recent years, is one of the most significant as it is connected to both the life and death of St James in the first century.
The book contains:
- 36 daily stage maps and contour guides
- 22 town plans
- alternative routes
- accommodation
